Abandoned vehicles have become an increasing problem in the Epping Forest District and we need your help in tackling the problem.

What should I do?

If you see a suspected abandoned vehicle, you can report it online or call us on 01992 564608 from 9am to 5pm Monday to Friday.

If the vehicle is on the road in a dangerous position or condition, call Essex Police Police.

Abandoned vehicles are an eyesore and have an adverse affect on the environment. Broken glass, oil spills and road obstructions all give cause for concern. We have powers to remove and dispose of abandoned vehicles under the Refuse Disposal (Amenity) Act 1978 and Essex Police has powers to deal with vehicles on the highway, which are in a dangerous position or condition.

In one year we received 1,281 complaints about abandoned vehicles, removing 251. It is a criminal offence to abandon a vehicle, with a maximum fine of up to £2,500 and or 3 months imprisonment.

If you need to dispose of a vehicle take it to a reputable garage or scrap merchant. Make sure you complete and return the necessary paperwork to the DVLA.

If you fail to do this and your vehicle is subsequently found abandoned, you are liable for the statutory costs of £105 for removal, £12 storage per 24 hours and £50 disposal costs (all are subject to VAT).

The Council is looking to step up action against people who do not dispose of their vehicle properly. We have a direct line to the DVLA to find owners faster.

We will do our best to remove abandoned vehicles, the legal powers that we have do not always provide a speedy or effective remedy. Where there are problems with individual cases we will always try to let you know why.
