If the vehicle is on the road or in a dangerous position or condition, call your local Police station. Contact Essex Police here.

Abandoned vehicles are not only an eyesore but also they have an adverse affect on the environment and the local community.  Broken glass, oil spills and road obstructions all give cause for concern.  The Council has powers to remove and dispose of abandoned vehicles under the Refuse Disposal (Amenity) Act 1978. Alternatively, the Police have the powers to deal with vehicles on the highway, which are in a dangerous position or condition.

In 2004/05, we received 1281 complaints about abandoned vehicles and we removed 251 Vehicles.

If you have a vehicle that you need to dispose of please take it to a reputable garage or scrap merchant and make sure that you complete the necessary paperwork, and return it to the D.V.L.A. If you do not do this and the vehicle is subsequently found abandoned, you may be liable for the statuary costs of £105 for removal. £12 storage per 24 hours and £50 disposal costs (all costs are also subject to VAT)

Abandoning a vehicle is also a criminal offence, which can carry a fine up to £2,500 and or 3 months imprisonment.  The Council is looking to step up action against people who do not dispose of their vehicle properly.

The council now has a direct line to the DVLA to find owners faster.

Please Note: that whilst the Council will do its best to remove abandoned vehicles, the legal power that we have do not always provide a speedy or effective remedy.  Where there are problems with individual cases we will always try to let you know why.
