Don't Rubbish Essex

A guide to getting the most out of recycling. Every year Essex households throw away over 700,000 tonnes of rubbish, about 500kg for every adult and child living in Essex.

Recycle Now

The Recycle Now campaign has been created and is run by WRAP, which stands for the Waste & Resources Action Programme. WRAP will be working closely with councils and retailers to make sure the recycling message is heard.

Re-use Equipment

The links below are for organisations we have found that reuse and restore second-hand furniture / computer equipment / household objects.

Essex Community Reuse & Recycling Network

Currently in Essex there are over 29 community organisations who derive all or part of their income and activity from diverting waste for re-use and / or recycling. This includes over 13 active furniture re-use / redistribution projects and there are also over 200 individual charity shops.

Furniture re-use Network

The FRN promotes the re-use of unwanted furniture and household effects for the alleviation of need, hardship, distress and poverty.

FRN aims are bringing social, economic and environmental benefit through the re-use of unwanted household items.

Rainbow Services

Rainbow Services works for change by providing services which improve the quality of life for people living in the local community.

The Furniture and Clothing projects re-use donated items of furniture, clothing and household linens to families and individuals living on a low income.

Freegle is a national grassroots organisation of people who are giving and receiving free unwanted items in their immediate communities.  Local charities, non-profit groups and communities are encouraged to join.  All groups within this organisation operate with a basic principle - all offers and requests must be freegle (free and legal).  our aim is to keep anything reusable out of our landfill sites.  Meeting new people helps to develop local community networks and friendships in the process.

WRAP

WRAP works in partnership to encourage and enable businesses and consumers to be more efficient in their use of materials and recycle more things more often. This helps to minimise landfill, reduce carbon emissions and improve our environment.
