What Counts As Capital?

All savings, investments, shares or property that you own other than the property you live in will count as capital.

    Is any capital ignored?
  • If you are under 60 any capital less than £6,000 is ignored.
  • If you are over 60 any capital under £6,000 is ignored.

How do you calculate income from capital?

We do not take into account the actual interest you get on any savings you have; instead we calculate based on the amount of capital.

    Under 60's
  • Under £6,000 - No income
  • Every £250 over £6,000 - £1 per week income
    Aged 60 and over
  • Under £6,000 - No Income
  • Every £500 over £6,000 - £1 per week income
All claimants (except those in receipt of Gurantee Pension Credit)
  • £16,000 and over - No benefit entitlement
