If you find yourself in the middle of an emergency, your common sense and instincts will usually tell you what to do.
Make sure someone has dialled 999 if someone has been injured or there is a threat to life.
Do not put yourself or others in danger.
Follow the advice and instructions of the emergency services.
Try to remain calm and think before you act, try to reassure others.
Check for injuries but help yourself before attempting to assist others.
Move to a safe place, building or designated muster point and remain there until instructed to do otherwise.
For most emergencies you are advised to go inside a safe building and close all windows and doors. Stay inside until you are advised otherwise, and tune in to your local TV or radio station. If the emergency is a fire, you must go outside and stay outside. Call the fire service.
If your children are at school you will naturally want to collect them as soon as possible in the event of an emergency, however it may not be safe to do so. TUNE IN to your local radio station for advice and for details of the arrangements your local Council has made for letting parents know when to collect their children from school.
You may be asked to evacuate your property or place of work by the emergency services. Leave as quickly and calmly as possible and you will be taken to a place of safety such as a local authority rest centre.
