Applying for a council or housing association home

Epping Forest District Council lets around 500 council properties each year and ‘nominates’ people to housing associations. Vacant properties are let through the HomeOption choice based lettings scheme.

To apply for housing you need to join our Housing Register.  The Housing Register is for new applicants, and for existing council and housing association tenants who want to move. You need to complete a Housing Application Form, but we suggest you read our leaflet  Moving home with the Council before you apply. This gives details about who can and cannot join the Housing Register. It also explains how we decide who has priority for any offer of housing.

Application Form

You can download the "Housing Application Form" here, or we can send you a housing application pack by post. Email your request to housingoptions@eppingforestdc.gov.uk

When you have completed the application form please post it to: Housing Needs Section, Epping Forest District Council, Civic Offices, High Street, Epping, Essex CM16 4BZ

You must include photocopies of the documents listed in the ‘Information’ section on page 2 of the application form.

Please note: Demand for council and housing association accommodation is very high in this district. If you live outside the Epping Forest district you may be eligible to join our Housing Register. But it is unlikely we will ever be able to offer you a home unless you wish to live in sheltered housing and you are aged 60 or above.

An application for housing can be made anywhere in this country. You can find the local council in any area on www.direct.gov.uk

Renewing your application  You will need to renew your application each year. A letter and renewal form will be sent to you on the anniversary of the date you applied. When you fill in the form you should include any changes to your application.

For more detailed information you can download the Council's complete "Housing Allocation Scheme" here.

Self Assessment Medical Form  You should complete this form if someone in your household has a health condition which is affected by their housing situation. The Council may take this condition into account when assessing or reviewing your housing application, but you should read the guidance included with the form. Download the Self Assessment Medical Form here.

Mutual exchange

A mutual exchange is a 'swap' between two of more tenants. With the Council's permission you could move to another council of housing association property anywhere in the country. Click here for more information on mutual exchanges.

If you are homeless

Phone 01992 564000 and ask for the Homelessness Section if you have nowhere to live and are in urgent need of help. Our leaflet "Homelessness" gives some information and advice. Click here for more information on your housing options.

Housing for older people

If you are interested in the Council’s sheltered accommodation or "very sheltered" housing, please fill in section 13 on the Housing Application Form. Click here for more information on housing services for older people.

Key Workers

Many people who work in public services are considered to be Key Workers. Some new housing schemes are targeted towards these workers. If you work in the public sector please complete a "Key Worker Registration Form" and return it with your application form.
