Our policy is to be "firm but fair" if council tenants have rent arrears. Tenants should contact their Area Housing Office as soon as possible if they have problems paying their rent. We give advice on managing finances, and agreement can be made to pay off rent arrears over a period of time. First we send warning letters to tenants in rent arrears, then a ‘Notice of Seeking Possession’ followed by court action. If necessary, we evict.
Tenants on low incomes should get advice on "Housing Benefits"
The Council will make every endeavour to recover any former tenant arrears if a tenant surrenders the tenancy or abandons the property without paying the rent up to date.
