There are over 1,400 housing association properties in this district. Some people on our Housing Register (waiting list) are offered a housing association property instead of a council home. Click here for more information on applying for housing.
Housing associations are ‘Registered Social Landlords’ not private landlords. They provide housing in a very similar way to the Council and are non-profit making. They are run by Committees, who are unpaid, and managed by paid, professional housing officers. People who rent a housing association property must meet their rules and conditions of tenancy. The housing association will carry out most repairs. Some homes are made available on a part buy and part rent basis, often known as shared ownership. Currently there are shared ownership opportunities at The Borders, Sewardstone Road. Contact Estuary Housing Association for more information by phoning Juliet or Ronnie on 0845 634 0635, or email leasehold@estuary.co.uk Website www.estuary.co.uk
Homebuy is a programme that helps people who wish to buy a property but cannot afford to, and those who wish to rent but cannot afford market rents. Most of the people eligible are either public sector key workers or people in other priority groups, for example council or housing association tenants. Most associations are registered with the Housing Corporation. The Housing Corporation is a ‘Non Departmental Public Body’, sponsored by the Government. Its role is to fund and regulate Registered Social Landlords (RSLs) in England. The 'Public RSL Register' gives some basic information on housing associations (RSLs) currently registered with the Housing Corporation.
