European Union Directive 2001/42/EC has introduced the need for local planning authorities to produce a Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) of "plans which are likely to have significant effects on the environment".
The Local Plan Alterations are not currently affected by this legislation as formal stages in the preparation of the Alterations were started before July 2004, and it is intended that they will be adopted prior to the deadline of 21 July 2006. The full requirements of the SEA Directive cannot be met at this stage, as the intial scoping exercise cannot now be undertaken. A voluntary SEA for the First Deposit has been undertaken by Consultants on behalf of the Council, that follows the SEA guidance as closely as possible.
