Great efforts, backed by valued advice from Chris Neilan, were made to maintain the large Horse chestnut on the Green in Roydon but eventually reducing the crown did not succeed and the tree was felled.
The tree was an important visual feature, the site of a series of tree dressings and the logo for Roydon School. It had become a symbol for the village. Clearly its replacement would have to be a variety with stature. After consultation the decision was taken to have a London Plane. It is quick growing, sturdy and attractive, so not surprising it is popular in built-up areas.
We were able to purchase a fine specimen already 15 years old. Funding came from individual donations, Roydon Parish Council and Roydon Countrycare Fund.

The planting ceremony took place in National Tree Week. Roydon School was involved: children read wonderful poems they had specially composed and illustrated to welcome the new tree and say farewell to the old one. They joined residents in adding spadefuls of earth to finish the planting. The first of December was rather early for the pantomime season but we ended with a loud shout to welcome the tree to Roydon. Or rather, two shouts because the first was not loud enough!
