Smoke control areas

Smoke control areas relate to chimney smoke and burning fuel in fireplaces in houses and not bonfires. For further advice on bonfires see our web page on bonfires and burning waste.

What does it mean if my property is in a Smoke Control Area?

Only approved fireplaces burning authorised fuels declared by regulations under the Clean Air Act may be used in buildings or parts of buildings separately occupied, to which it would not be reasonably practicable to provide gas for the purposes of ignition.

This means that if you could reasonably install a gas fire (i.e. if you have mains gas), you cannot have an open fire in your property.  If you do not have mains gas, you can have an open fire, but it must be an approved fireplace and only burn authorised fuels that are listed in Regulations made under the Clean Air Act 1993.

Further information:

Additional information on authorised fuels and exempt appliances can be found on the Governments website and the Department for Environment Food and Rural Affairs (Defra) web site on Smoke Control Areas.

Contact the Council’s Neighbourhoods Directorate on 01992 564608 for further advice.

Waste and environment

Recycling and Waste pages provide information on recycling and waste management services in the Epping Forest District.

Parking - find pay and display car parks in the district and pay for your parking online.

Crime, Safety and Environment pages cover four key areas:

  • Environments and Neighbourhoods Team plays a key role in the delivery of the Council’s “Safer, Cleaner, Greener” strategy.  The uniformed team of seven Environment & Neighbourhood Officers (ENO) are accredited under the Essex Police Community Safety Accreditation Scheme (CSAS) and are empowered to issue Fixed Penalty Notices for a range of environmental crime offences such as littering and dog fouling.
  • Community Safety Partnership is a statutory body of different organisations who work together to reduce crime and disorder in the district.
  • Safeguarding children, young people and adults.
  • Human Trafficking - what are the signs to look for?

The Engineering, Drainage and Water Team offers advice and support to residents on land drainage matters.

Trees and Landscaping - As the name would suggest Epping Forest District boasts a rich heritage of trees and landscape. A number of these trees are either the responsibility of the Council, or are protected by the Council.

You can inform us about abandoned vehicles, get advice from our animal welfare officers, stay in touch with the latest information on climate change, conservation areas and listed buildings. You can also view online our local plan / planning our future.
