Nazeing is a village in West Essex of some 4000 acres and 5000 inhabitants. Its origin and name is considered to be Saxon - 'people of the headland' - but there is some evidence of Roman and prehistoric presence. In the 16th and 17th centuries a number of timber-framed houses were built and a system of commoning was introduced. The village expanded considerably in the 20th century with new housing estates. In the Second World War there was a dummy airfield as a decoy for the fighter station at North Weald, a private airfield was taken over by the RAF as a maintenance depot and the Outer London Defence Ring passed through the village.
The Nazeing History Workshop was formed in 1993 by a group of people living in the village with an interest in lcoal history and who were prepared to take an active part in its work. These members pay no subscription as they make a contribution with their research which they then share. There are now some associate members who pay a subscription, and some ex-officio members. Neither of these classes are required to carry out any work, but may attend mettings. Al members receive a regular newsletter.
We meet regularly in members' homes when one of us gives a talk or leads a discussion on a research topic, or we may have an outside speaker.
We are affiliated to the British Association for Local History and the Essex Society for Archaeology and History, and have strong links with local museums.
