All workshops involve pupils in working hands on with objects to investigate and understand the past.
Pupils will develop their subject knowledge and a wide range of key skills through the learning activities in the workshops, for example;
- Observation - learning to look close up and notice small details in objects that can provide important clues about what the object is and what it was used for
- Research - pupils will be provided with additional objects and information so they can do their own research to establish what the objects are and what they can tell us about people in the past
- Team work - all of the group activities rely on pupils sharing ideas and working together to make decisions about objects
- Presentation - pupils are encouraged to share their findings with the rest of the class, often taking on the role of 'expert' on their object
- Speaking - these skills are a crucial part of each workshop as pupils must be able to explain clearly what they've discovered and what evidence they used to reach their conclusions
- Listening - just as important as pupils must listen carefully to their classmates' findings and consider if any of their ideas affect their thoughts about the object they've looked at
- Historical Investigation - the importance of using original objects, looking at as wide a range of evidence as possible, carrying out research and sharing findings are underlined in every workshop
