Freedom of Information Act

Freedom of InformationThe Freedom of Information (FOI) Act 2000 came into force in January 2005 and gives any person legal rights of access to information which is held by a public authority.

Under the Freedom of Information Act you may request information from a public authority which has functions in England, Wales and/or Northern Ireland.

Epping Forest District Council is committed to Freedom of Information and must reply to any written request for information within 20 working days of the date of receipt.

The Act confers two statutory rights for applicants:
  1. To be told whether or not the public authority holds that information, and if so
  2. To have that information communicated to them, if it is not exempt under the law

Publication and Policy Scheme

The Freedom of Information Act requires all public authorities to adopt and maintain a publication and policy scheme. The idea of the scheme is to let everyone know what information we automatically or routinely publish. The way that the Act does this is to require that the scheme specify classes of information.

Request Information

To make a request for information under the Freedom of Information Act you must make a written request.

Further information and guidance on all aspects of Freedom of Information can be found on the Information Commissioner's Office website at www.ico.gov.uk (opens in a new window).
