A blind puppy which was being taken to a temporary home after it was rescued from a London rubbish tip has been stolen from Epping Forest District Council animal warden Lynn Cook's van in the council car park, Epping.

Two people in a red van were caught on CCTV in the car park at 10.40am today (Friday 1 December 2006).

Council spokesman Tom Carne said the thieves would not have been able to see the 15-week-old German Shepherd puppy, named Dave, until they had got into the vehicle.

The puppy is black and tan, with a short coat, and was wearing a red collar.

Mr Carne said: "Thieves may think they have a valuable animal but what they would not have realised at the time of the theft is that this puppy is blind. It was rescued from a rubbish tip in London a few days ago and was on its way to a temporary home while we were searching for a permanent new home for it."

Details of the dog have been logged at www.doglost.co.uk and appeals are being made on local radio.

Anyone who has any information about the puppy's whereabouts should ring Lynn Cook on 07714 854790.
