The Citizen of the Year 2008 is Mr John Filby, a well-known and respected resident of Abridge who is held in deep affection after a life-time of community service focused through local institutions of the church, school and parish council. In 40 years or so, our winner has made countless contributions of time, expertise and hard work on behalf of the people of Abridge and Lambourne. Thirty years since his child left the local school, he remains on the PTA, having until very recently spent eight years as the Chairman of Governors.
John was one of the founding members of the Village Hall Committee, becoming a trustee and has helped raised thousands of pounds for many good causes. Each Christmas he is to be found organising and encouraging the amazing Abridge Christmas light displays, carol singing and entertaining local school children dressed as Father Christmas in a horse-drawn cart and makes major contributions to the annual carnival and village show. One of his most valued contributions has been as a member of Lambourne and Abridge Church Council. His support for his local church goes well beyond formal meetings and committees. As one of the Friends of Lambourne Church he has raised thousands of pounds over the years for the care and repair of the beautiful listed building.
John has been a Parish Councillor for more than 30 years and has been honoured with the Chairmanship no fewer than four separate times. Nominator Rev Gay Ellis wrote: “When I came to the Parish, I was amazed at the amount of work he does, the longer I have been here, the more I have seen and heard. He is dearly loved because he has helped so many, he has enriched the whole community.”
This Year’s award was made from a shortlist of three highly deserving individuals and a husband and wife. Peter Trevelyan of High Ongar and Derek Tringham of North Weald, and Sam and Ruth Day receive High Commendations to be presented by the Chairman at a later date.
