Community Service medals are awarded to members of the Emergency Services who have made a special contribution or shown care and dedication well above and beyond the call of duty.
This year’s winner was nominated by Essex Ambulance NHS Trust. Colin Kitney, who is based at Loughton Ambulance Station, has completed 24 years of service to the residents of the Epping Forest District and is one of the most experienced and qualified members of the Essex Ambulance Service. Brian O’Connell of Essex Ambulance Service said in Colin’s nomination that despite working in extreme operational environments, he has never lost his compassion for people. After many years working as part of two-man crews he now operates a one-man rapid response vehicle which often makes him the first person at the scene. He also gives first aid training to local young people and acts as a mentor to new paramedics.
