Epping Forest District Council’s Landscape section and Countrycare, the Council’s countryside management service will be appearing on BBC TWO’s ‘Trees that Made Britain’ programme.

They will appear on the programme that goes out at 7.30pm on Friday 16 May 2008 which will feature the Council’s 50 Favourite Trees project. The programme’s presenters Jon Hammerton and Tony Kirkham are seen at Thomas Willingale School in Loughton climbing their oak tree. This tree was under threat and so the school made a special case for it with the Council and it was eventually saved. It was nominated by the pupils and became one of the district’s 50 Favourite Trees chosen by a panel of judges. Judging of the nominations is also featured in the programme. Over 160 nominations were received in total.

The Council’s Landscape Officer and Arboriculturist Chris Neilan said: “The 50 Favourite Trees project has been a fantastic success and we all very much enjoyed taking part in the programme. I hope as many people as possible will tune in on 16 May 2008, especially those residents who took the time and trouble to nominate their favourite tree.”

Another tree featured in the programme is the black poplar on the Waltham Point development in Waltham Abbey. This tree was protected during the development and is now a focal point for the area.
