The sacrifice of two world wars and innumerable smaller conflicts were remembered by staff and councillors of Epping Forest District Council. As the clock struck eleven, the flags outside the Civic Offices in Epping were lowered to half mast. People throughout the Council observed the two minutes of silence. The ceremony was led by the Chairman of Council, Councillor Penny Smith and the President of the Royal British Legion Epping and District Branch Kevin Toole.

Councillor Smith thanked Mr Toole and everyone who joined her for the lowering of the flags and for observing the silence. Afterwards she said: “This has been a momentous year. We have seen the passing of the last British Tommies who fought in the trenches of the First World War. Despite the passing of time, the Act of Remembrance remains as important today as it has ever been. Thousands of miles away, our armed forces continue to place themselves in harm’s way for us.”

Councillor Smith went on to say: “And we should remember those who fought in World War II as we remember all conflicts since 1945. The fallen and their comrades who are now in their 80s and 90s. Nearly every family has a story to tell of a parent, grandparent or other relation who laid down their life in the defence of our freedom and our Country. We will remember them.”
