Tributes to Chigwell Councillor

Tributes were paid to Councillor David Bateman at the first meeting of Epping Forest District Council since he passed away in August. Councillor Penny Smith, Chairman of Council welcomed Councillor Bateman’s widow, Sandra, and son David to the Chamber.

Councillor Di Collins, Leader of Council led the tributes. Councillor Jon Whitehouse echoed her praise for the work carried out by Councillor Bateman over many years on the Council.

Councillor Stephen Murray spoke for many with affection for Councillor Bateman. He remembered his knowledge of Chigwell and Limes Farm in particular where Councillor Bateman worked so hard for his residents.

Fellow Chigwell Councillor John Knapman spoke of his shock. He remembered David Bateman’s passion for golf and support for the Chairman’s Charity. His legacy would include tireless campaigning to improve the safety of local roads and his care for the people of Limes Farm.

Councillor Pat Richardson spoke of David Bateman’s gentleness while Councillor Caroline Pond was among many to remember his political independence.

Councillor Penny Smith, invited Sandra and David to receive the Long Service Medal that would have been presented to Councillor Bateman. Mrs Bateman thanked all councillors for the many kind words spoken in memory of her husband.
