The Youth Council was formed in 2007 primarily to involve young people, living in the Epping Forest District, in the decisions made by Epping Forest District Council. The Council wanted to know what young people thought about its services and about the issues that affect them.
Youth Council candidates are elected by their local school and sit on the Youth Council for two years; they attend 2 evening meetings a month, giving young people a voice regarding important, local issues. The current Youth Council has 4 sub-groups and delegates individual duties in order to ensure everyone has a role and can affect change and make improvements in the areas they focus on.
In order to achieve this, the Youth Councillors seek to listen to the views of young people in their community through consultation and events.

There are 5 Independent seats for young people aged 13 to 17 years living in the Epping Forest District but who either attend school or College outside of the District, are excluded from school, home educated or working.
The Youth Councillors are now planning the 2nd Youth Election and they will be inviting schools, youth groups and Epping Forest College to hold Youth Elections during the two week period from Monday 21 September 2009 until Friday 2 October 2009. Any one aged 13 to 17 who lives in the Epping Forest District can nominate themselves to stand as a Youth Councillor.
