Used aerosol cans and foil can now be recycled from home as Epping Forest District Council has expanded its kerbside recycling collection to include these materials.
Empty aerosol cans, like those used for deodorants and air fresheners, plus aluminium foil and trays used for takeaway food, pie cases and oven ready meals will be collected along with other dry recyclables further reducing the amount of waste going to landfill.
Householders are advised to ensure aerosols are completely used and the containers not pierced, crushed or flattened before being put in the recycling sacks. Any loose or easily removable parts, such as the lid, should be removed and put into the clear sacks separately. Foil containers should be rinsed clean before recycling.

Epping Forest District Council Environment Portfolio Holder Councillor Mary Sartin, said: "This is great news for households who want to do more to help the environment. It answers calls from local residents to increase the range of items that can be recycled at the kerbside. The aluminium and steel used in these containers can be recycled endlessly without losing quality, this is a really effective way to help reduce carbon emissions, save energy and ease the pressure on our landfill sites."
Local resident Joyce Plume from Buckhurst Hill said: "I’m really pleased that the recycling scheme is being expanded. We don’t use many aerosols or foil trays, but I’ve always hated throwing them in the rubbish. It’s great that we can now put them in with our other recycling."
