High Sheriff Rewards Community Activities

Voluntary Action Epping Forest and Roding Valley U3A were among charities and individuals to receive awards from the High Sheriff of Essex Rupert Gosling. Certificates and grants totalling £4843 were awarded to fund projects and recognise the work being undertaken by local people who are helping to make Epping Forest communities safe from crime.

A special ceremony, sponsored by Essex County Council and organised by Essex Community Foundation was held at the Fennes Estate, Bocking on the 10th March. Around 220 invited guests including, the Chairman of Essex County Council, Cllr Elizabeth Hart , Chief Constable of Essex Police Jim Barker-McCardle and many past High Sheriffs of Essex attended the event.

Steve Scruton from BBC Essex, compared the event, and invited winners to receive their certificates and cheques from the High Sherriff and talked to them about their work, helping the audience to gain a greater understanding of the varied activity that is taking place across Epping Forest to make our community safe from crime and the fear of crime.

Hannah Webster from the Loughton Youth Project (LYP) was joint winner of the Essex Police Cup for showing exceptional skills, drive and commitment in furthering youth opportunities making Loughton and Debden a safer place to live.

List of awards and grants for Epping Forest
• The volunteers of Roding Valley U3A – for performing and supporting a series of sketches showing older people in Epping Forest District the dangers of bogus callers and distraction burglaries
• Janet Whitehouse – For the support and determination involved in arranging the “Feeling Good, Keeping Safe” bogus caller/distraction burglary theatre project to Epping Forest District.
• Hannah Webster – For showing exceptional skills, drive and commitment in furthering youth opportunities making Loughton and Debden a safer place to live.
• Project “Freefall” – To recognise the dedication and care shown by all those involved with project Freefall which installs Keysafes and portable door chimes in the homes of vulnerable people in Epping Forest.
• Kidx Club Inc – £1000 To help young volunteers at the after school club for young children in Loughton attend a training event.
• Loughton Youth project – £1000 To facilitate Community Radio Broadcasting training and support the initial Youth Project Magazine
• Voluntary Action Epping Forest - Mow and Grow Project – £843 To buy new gardening tools for the garden maintenance service for vulnerable people
• Voluntary Action Epping Forest - Crucial Crew - £1000 To support the cost of the 2010 Crucial Crew Crime Prevention and personal safety Education programme for 10- 11 year old children
• Waltham Abbey Youth 2000 – £1000 Towards the cost of new counselling facility for young people at the youth club.
