Support Your Neighbour

Published on 6 January 2010

“Please be a good neighbour” says Epping Forest District Council. According to the experts, Britain is experiencing one of the coldest sustained periods of poor weather and snow for years.

Councillor Di Collins, Leader of the Council and Chairman of ‘One’ the Epping Forest Local Strategic Partnership of organisations including local police, health and voluntary services said: “Severe weather puts a great deal of extra strain on local services but it is in these situations that we find the best examples of community spirit. If you know someone who may be vulnerable why not give them a ring or a knock on the front door just to make sure they are all right.”

The Council is also reminding people to prepare well if travelling. “Have plenty of warm clothing and an emergency supply of food and drink in your car” says Councillor Collins. “Make sure you are not short on fuel and put a spade in the boot. Make sure your mobile phone is charged and has enough credit. Keep a careful eye on weather reports and travel news before deciding to travel. Tuning into your local radio station can be the best source of news.”

Council services such as refuse and recycling are affected. Loughton Library where the District Council Information Desk is based is closed. District Council staff and contractors are being switched from normal duties such as grounds maintenance and litter clearing to help support County Council gritting operations. While most services have been operating normally, if road conditions deteriorate significantly staff in non-critical services areas who are not diverted to support key services may be sent home early.

Keep an eye on the Council website for updates.
