A total of 25 golfers comprising councillors, officers, former employees and guests of the chairman, took to the fairways to raise money for the chairman’s chosen charities this year – Homestart and St Clare Hospice.

Winner of the Don Spinks Shield, and champion golfer for 2011, was housing officer Tony Cooper with a score of 37 stableford points. Tony has supported this event for over ten years and was a popular winner.

The Robert O’Malley Cup for Ladies Golfers was won on count-back by Annette Stansfield from the Council’s Leisure contract provider Sports and Leisure Management Limited with a score of 36 points. Annette had won the Don Spinks Shield in 2010 and this win made it two trophies in successive years.

Joint runners-up also with 36 points were Kim Bames from Sport and Leisure Management and Sports Development Manager James Warwick, who had the consolation of hitting the longest drive on the 18th fairway. Brian Penelver won the competition for the highest placed guest of the chairman with a score of 31 points and the Nearest-the-Pin prize on the 10th hole went to senior housing officer Colin Stone. Other notable scores were Colin Stone again with 34 points, sports development officer James Carstairs with 32 points and senior electoral services officer Wendy Macleod with 31 points.

The chairman’s wife, Mrs Jill Angold-Stephens provided welcome refreshment at the halfway stage, which proved popular with all the contestants as they walked between the ninth green and the tenth tee. After handing out the prizes, the chairman thanked all involved for taking part and supporting the Chairman’s Charity Appeal for 2011 / 2012. It was confirmed the following day that a total of £700.53 had been raised.
