Lady Godiva, a 6-metre high puppet propelled by a team of 100 cyclists is making her way to Waltham Abbey. The fully-clothed version of the English heroine set out from Coventry on Sunday. She will arrive in Waltham Abbey for an over-night stay on Saturday (4 August), leaving for Waltham Forest on Sunday morning as part of the Cultural Olympiad.
Civic dignitaries led by Councillor Liz Webster Mayor of Waltham Abbey and Councillor Brian Rolfe Chairman of Epping Forest District Council are expected to be joined by residents and well-wishers as Lady Godiva enters the town via Highbridge Street at about 4.30 on Saturday afternoon.
Transferring from her travelling to walking ‘rig’, Lady Godiva will pause for formalities by the Abbey Church before processing down Church Street, across Market Square and along Sun Street to the the Epping Forest District Museum.
The puppet is travelling from Coventry via Northampton, Milton Keynes, Luton, Hatfield and Waltham Abbey using a bike called the Cyclopedia. Progress is sedate with cyclists travelling between 20 and 30 miles each day.
Lady Godiva is scheduled to depart from the Museum at about 5.20pm, walking back to Market Square and her ‘overnight accommodation’.
