A new countywide scheme for the disposal of household bonded asbestos began in Essex this month.
The scheme, operated by Essex County Council, is open to residents in the Epping Forest district.
From 17 December bonded asbestos has been included as part of the Council’s Household Hazardous Waste Collection scheme (HHW) which has been operating successfully for many years collecting hazardous chemicals and other items from domestic premises.
Through the scheme, operators will collect up to 40 kg of bonded asbestos from a resident’s home free of charge. In general terms this accounts for up to two sheets of bonded asbestos, or a water tank or a piece of down pipe.
Residents must wrap sheets and large pieces of bonded asbestos in polythene, while smaller pieces must be double black bagged. Amounts over 40 kg are regarded as construction waste and residents must make their own arrangements to dispose of it properly.
Bonded asbestos will still not be accepted at civic amenity and recycling centres due to health and safety issues. For more information on how to access the service contact the Essex County Council Waste and Recycling Helpline - 01245 491222.
