Springs Pond Wood, Ongar.

Today we’ll be working on the paths, knocking back encroaching bramble and re-coppicing some more Hawthorns. We’ll also have some recently felled trees to clear up and burn. Meet: 10.00am, at Ongar Allotments.  Parking available at the lorry park on The Borough opposite the Two Brewers Public House where a member of staff will direct you to the site. Grid Reference:  Parking at TL 550 025.  Site entrance at: TL 552 027.

Don’t forget we pick up from Loughton Tube Station every Thursday at 9.30 am*. All volunteer days start at 10am on site unless otherwise stated.  The Countrycare Office telephone is 01992 564224.

Access: Via Castle Street. Permissive footpath at the  southern end of allotments. No formal car park. Street parking

Site Description: Springs Pond Wood is a privately owned woodland situated a short walk from Chipping Ongar High Street.  An agreement is in place between Countrycare and the landowner to provide support for the management of this site, broadly consisting of keeping the paths open and the site safe and accessible.

As the name suggests there is a large pond to the eastern end of the site and a number of springs and wet flushes throughout the wood.  Cripsey Brook marks the site’s southern boundary, with agricultural land to the north and east and allotments to the west.  Although public footpath no.19 passes nearby there are no public footpaths through the site, there is however a permissive access through the wood.
