We aim to be firm but fair with council tenants who have rent arrears. Tenants should contact their Area Housing Office as soon as possible if they have problems paying their rent. We give advice on managing finances, and an agreement can be made to pay off the arrears over a period of time. If a tenant does not take steps to deal with rent arrears we send a warning letter, then a ‘Notice of Seeking Possession’ followed by court action. If necessary, we will use bailiffs or evict the tenant.
Advice for tenants with low incomes:
The council will make every effort to recover any former tenant arrears if a tenant surrenders the tenancy or abandons the property, without paying the rent up to the date they left.

You should note that we shut the rent system down for updating on Monday mornings (or Tuesday if there is a Monday Bank Holiday). Your housing officer will not be able to check your account during this time, so please avoid Monday mornings if you want to discuss your rent.
