Essex Police are investigating a series of burglary offences committed in sheltered accommodation whereby the suspects have used distraction techniques to ‘con’ their way inside residential properties in attempt to steal property.
The key message is to be alert not alarmed. Extensive enquiries are ongoing to trace the suspects responsible.
The following safety advice can be provided to residents:
- Check the identity of any doorstep visitors including those in uniform. Ask for ID and understand that there are no issues with checking that person’s ID, either by telephoning the number of the company/agency (look this up in a phonebook or on the Internet) or by calling a family member/member of staff. If the caller is genuine they will be happy to wait whilst you do this. THIS INCLUDES POLICE OFFICERS IN OR OUT OF UNIFORM!
- Never give out any personal details to a doorstep caller or to any person who calls on the telephone
- Use door chains/viewers if fitted
- If someone refuses to show ID or is persistent in getting inside your property then call 999 straight away
Essex Police regularly hold events in your community where you can come along and discuss concerns with local officers. Keep an eye on noticeboard and local newsletters to find one nearest to you.
