Parcels sponsored by Costa coffee and The Reading Agency are being delivered to 600 families across Epping Forest District this Christmas.
Each coffee-and-book care package contains one adult book, one children’s book, a children’s activity sheet and a range of Costa coffee treats.
Families affected by COVID-19
EFDC Community Culture and Wellbeing team, Community Champions and The Red Balloon Foundation are delivering the packages to families worst hit by the COVID-19 Pandemic.
The Red Balloon Foundation is supporting local families in the Ongar area that have been financially impacted by the COVID-19 outbreak and will be delivering the Costa packs alongside food packages.
The scheme is a collaboration with Active Essex, the Essex Child & Family Wellbeing Service and Epping Forest District Council.
The Costa coffee Gift-A-Book campaign is inspired by Jolabokaflod, the Icelandic tradition of exchanging books with loved ones. It is a Christmas Eve tradition dating back to World War II where families give and receive books and read through the night with chocolate and a hot drink.
Cllr Holly Whitbread, Cabinet Member for Housing and Communities praised the initiative, saying:
What a lovely tradition! Hopefully it will bring a little joy to the families in our community who are struggling during the current situation.
Wishing our communities, a very Merry Christmas!
