Epping Forest District Museum has been awarded Hidden Gem status in VisitEngland’s 2021-2022 Visitor Attraction Accolades.
Hidden Gem status
Marks were allocated for the outstanding experiences they provide to visitors across categories including welcome, best told story, with Hidden Gem and Gold for overall winners.
The Museum, in Sun Street, scored an overall 90% with 100% in cleanliness, customer care and staff knowledge.
The judge’s visit in February 2022 was during the Georgie Meadow’s stitched drawings exhibition. They praised the museum as:
A fine example of a small museum with a varied and intriguing range of content drawn from the local area, supplemented by a calendar of considered, relevant temporary exhibitions.
Staff were also praised for their knowledge and helpfulness.
A museum for everyone to enjoy
Cllr Aniket Patel, Cabinet Member for Wellbeing and Community Partnerships said:
This is great recognition for our local museum. The team works so hard at bringing exhibitions, workshops and activities to the museum for everyone to enjoy.
I understand the judge was particularly impressed by the full collections review which is currently underway which should result in fresh ideas for the museum going forward.
Introduced in 2014, the accolades cover a wide range of tourism experiences in England from museums and galleries, farm attractions, historic houses and gardens to churches, cathedrals and country parks. Participating attractions are supported by a network of highly trained and experienced assessors who advise them on improving and promoting the quality, accessibility, and sustainability of their offer.
