Epping Forest District Museum has been gifted the Waltham Sunday Football League archive.
For over 50 years until 2016, the Waltham Sunday Football League oversaw the successful programming of Sunday morning fixtures for hundreds of clubs and thousands of players across the Epping Forest district, the Borough of Broxbourne and Enfield areas.
Trophies and medals
The items donated by former League Vice President Ivor Chamberlain and League Secretary Denis Coventry, include trophies and medals, as well as an archive of directories and programmes. A selection of these items will be on display at the museum from December 2019 until February 2020.
Over the years the league was supported by many local businesses including the Lea Valley Mercury (now the Hertfordshire Mercury) newspaper and the Cheltenham and Gloucester Building Society.
With the kind consent and approval of the Hertfordshire Football Association and the League Trustees, this donation has been accompanied by a generous financial award to support the care and interpretation of the collection.
Helped to build communities
Cllr Nigel Bedford, Community and Partnership Services Portfolio Holder: “We are delighted to be able to add this collection of football memorabilia to the district’s historic collections. The fixtures organised by the league gave huge enjoyment, helped to build communities and contributed to the quality of life of the people of the Epping Forest district and we are proud to tell that story in our museum.”
Educational and community benefit
Denis Coventry, League Secretary and Trustee of the Waltham Football league said: “The Trustees are delighted that the league archive has been added to Epping Forest District Museum’s collection, where it will be used for educational and community benefit.”
