New museum exhibition and dementia-friendly status

Georgie Meadows: Stitched drawings New museum exhibition

The latest exhibition at Epping Forest District Museum is Georgie Meadows: Stitched Drawings.

The exhibition

The exhibition is on loan from the Wellcome Collection and opens Saturday 29 January.

‘Georgie Meadows: Stitched Drawings’ brings together 24 textile artworks that explore personal experiences of ageing and dementia.

Meadows, a Monmouth-based artist and retired occupational therapist, crafts unique portraits, translating line drawings of people she knows or has cared for into stitched works.

Remarkable collection

James Peto, Chief Curator at Welcome Collection, says:

“Georgie Meadows has made a remarkable collection of beautifully crafted images. Her stitched drawings are direct and deeply moving but also fulfil the more practical purpose the artist had in mind when making them – as teaching aids for helping others to understand some of the particular concerns that need to be addressed when working with the elderly.”

A dementia-friendly venue

Epping Forest District Museum has recently achieved a Dementia Friendly Venue Status accredited through Epping Forest Dementia Action Alliance.

The museum team has made a pledge through their action plan that states they will continually improve and promote dementia awareness, ensure the space is accessible and that services are inclusive for people affected by dementia.

This commitment includes colleagues from the Community, Culture and Wellbeing Team participating in Dementia Friends information sessions as well as an improved assessment of the building and facilities by people affected by dementia.
