Re-opening of the Museum!

Re-opening of the Museum!

Epping Forest District Museum reopened on Saturday 1 August, after closing for 5 months following government guidance during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Safety measures

Visitors must wear a face covering, unless they fall into one of the exempt categories.

A hand sanitiser station has been placed at the entrance and extra cleaning routines are in place.
Everyone is encouraged to keep their distance by following the social distancing rule of keeping 2-meters (or one baby mammoth) away from others.

The corridor on the ground floor has been expanded giving extra space allowing social distancing rules to be followed throughout the museum.

Museum staff are also asking visitors to leave their contact details to help with Track and Trace.

What’s on

The People Gallery has had a refresh during the closed period and features new local people and their stories.

Interactives and activities have been limited but a takeaway craft activity, for visitors to enjoy at home is available for just £1 so you can still enjoy our summer activities.

You Wear it Well

This exhibition tells the story of the museum’s fashion collection, spanning over 500 years. It includes various aspects of the history of clothes from early 20th century until the present day and explains how the collection officer and volunteers look after the objects and what damages could occur.

You Wear it Well is on display until Saturday 29 August.

Asset to the district

Epping Forest District Council Chairman, Councillor Helen Kane said:

We are so pleased to be able to reopen the museum and our other leisure services. It was great to visit the museum once again and see the various safety measures that have been put in place.

The public has been incredibly supportive of the museum during lockdown; where interaction has been limited to online and that support is greatly appreciated. The museum is a real asset to the district to keep local history alive.

Encourage everyone to visit

Councillor Holly Whitbread, Portfolio Holder for Housing and Community said:

It was amazing to finally be able to visit the museum. The team has done a wonderful job to ensure it is Covid secure.

I would encourage everyone to visit to view the brilliant exhibitions and learn about the district’s local history.
