Every day there are people in our district selflessly supporting others in the community – our unsung heroes.
Now it’s that time of year where we recognise some of these wonderful people through our Epping Forest District Council Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year and Team of the Year 2025 Awards.
These awards have been showcasing people in the community who go above and beyond, making positive changes in the Epping Forest district, for many years.
Citizen of the Year 2024
Last Year’s Citizen of the Year was Phillis Njuguna, who founded the Thrive Survivors Group in Epping, to assist those who have been impacted by domestic abuse.
Phillis was nominated for her dedication and impact in providing a safe and supportive space for survivors to reclaim their confidence.
Young Citizen of the Year 2024
The Young Citizen of the Year winner for 2024 was Sydnae Smith.
Sydnae is often relied upon to help care for her ill father at home and still finds time to support local residents specifically through her role as a Young Leader for the scouts. As a Young Leader, Sydnae mentors’ younger members, providing extra support to those who lack confidence.
Team of the Year 2024
Last Year’s Team of the Year was The Friends of St Andrew’s School who were nominated for holding multiple school events and raising over £20,000 to build a new inclusive play sensory trial for the school.
The team also worked with St Andrew’s Church last December to ensure that the children living in local temporary accommodation all received a Christmas present.
