1 week until recycling bin roll out

Housing, planning and environment news, News

There is now less than 1 week to go until the new blue-lidded recycling bins start being rolled out across the district.

The new blue-lidded wheeled bin replaces both the clear recycling sacks and blue box currently used for recycling … making recycling even easier.

The new bins will be delivered in stages from Monday 2 June through to July, ensuring there is no disruption to the waste collection service. All eligible households will get a 240-litre bin, which is bigger than the black-lidded household waste bins.

All your recycling in one bin

There will be no changes to residents’ collection days. Put your recycling out as usual before 6.30am on your collection day.

Items that can be recycled in the blue-lidded bin:

  • Glass bottles and jars – lids can be kept on
  • Food tins and drink cans
  • Clean paper, card and shredded paper
  • Plastic household bottles, food trays, containers and tubs
  • Aluminium foil and foil containers
  • Aerosol cans
  • Tetra Paks and other food cartons

Residents can use up any clear recycling sacks, as long as they are placed in the blue-lidded recycling bin. Collections from the blue boxes and clear recycling sacks will stop after the first collection once the new bin arrives.

Residents can keep their old recycling blue box to use as storage, or put it out with the refuse collection, or take it to their local recycling centre.

Simplify household recycling

We know that some residents have concerns about fitting all their recycling into one bin or not having enough room for another wheelie bin.

The new wheelie bins will save space as there is no longer the need to store full recycling sacks before your collection day – everything will go in the bin. As the new bins are bigger than our black refuse bins they can fit more in, and space can easily be created by flattening any plastics and breaking down cardboard boxes.

This rollout will simplify household recycling, making the waste collection service more efficient, cost-effect and resourceful. It also bring lasting environmental and financial benefits for both Epping Forest District Council and its residents by reducing waste and landfill costs. It means that money will be saved by cutting the need to produce millions of clear sacks each year, which can be put back into other services.
