The Church of All Saints in Chigwell Row is now a Grade II listed building.
On 25 October 2024, the Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport has decided to add the Church of All Saints, located on Romford Road in Chigwell Row, Essex – along with its boundary walls and lychgate – to the List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest.
Grade II listed building
The building is now listed at Grade II under the provisions of the Planning (Listed Buildings and Conservation Areas) Act 1990. Its list entry number is 1486047.
This designation, made upon the recommendation of Historic England, acknowledges the historic and architectural significance of the building, which is now protected as part of our nation’s heritage.
Reasons for designation
The church of All Saints, Chigwell Row, with its boundary walls and lychgate, constructed in 1865 to 1867 to the designs of JP Seddon with a tower and chancel added in 1903 and 1919 by unknown architects, is listed at Grade II for the following principal reasons.
Architectural interest
- The work of JP Seddon, a significant Victorian architect particularly celebrated for his ecclesiastical work
- For the high quality of the craftsmanship and materials
Historic interest
- As a good and largely intact example of a Victorian parish church built at the height of the gothic revival
