Councillors paid tribute to Sir Jack Petchey CBE, a former local resident, who passed away last month, just a few days short of his 99th birthday.
Members offered their condolences to Jack’s wife, Lady Frances Petchey and their family.
The Jack Petchey Foundation The Jack Petchey Foundation was set up to inspire and motivate young people. Since its launch in 1999, it has invested over £170 million in programmes to benefit young people aged 11-25 across London and Essex.
Many young people from the district, including Epping Forest Youth Councillors have participated in these programmes and received Jack Petchey Awards.
New airfield control tower
Members approved the allocation of monies from the capital programme to equip the new control tower building at North Weald Airfield. This funding will cover the costs of visual control room equipment, redirecting the power supply, and equipment for the new fire station that will be on site.
Terra Verde Services
Councillors received an update on the new waste and recycling company, Terra Verde Services (TVS). Plans are well underway to get the council-owned company ready to launch in November 2024.
Work has started to get the vehicle depot ready at North Weald Airfield, creating space for the waste trucks and a base for staff. Members were assured that although the vehicles, (hired from Specialist Fleet Services Ltd), are not all-electric, they do use an alternative clean fuel. This will help minimise costs and maximise the number of vehicles available for collection.
Other items
The council continues with its Fit for the Future plans, sharing services and resources among the North Essex councils of Epping Forest, Braintree, and Colchester, bringing promising benefits and opportunities for all 3 councils.
Members were pleased to hear that the Safer Streets project is being rolled out in Oakwood Hill, Loughton. The project addresses safety concerns from the community. It has already been successfully delivered in other parts of the district where residents and businesses have noticed a reduction in anti-social behaviour.
