Highway ranger service
In partnership with Essex County Council and Essex Highways the Highway Rangers carry out minor highway maintenance works around the district. This includes trimming vegetation at the side of the road, repairing and cleaning road signs.
The Highway Rangers generally only work on roads of 30mph and below and undertake minor highway maintenance works. Major highway works such as pothole repair should still be reported to Essex Highways.
Minor highway maintenance works
The highway rangers undertake a variety of minor highway maintenance works including:
- Cleaning and minor repairs to non-electrical road signs
- Cleaning and minor repairs to street furniture
- Reinstatement of posts and bollards (minimal excavation)
- Trimming of vegetation on highway land and removal of cuttings
- Ad hoc grass cutting and strimming
- Localised cleaning and minor excavation of footway drainage channels
- Removal of litter from highway land
- Removal of illegal signs and flyposting
- Minor block and flag paving repairs on the pavement and high streets

Major highways works
Report major highway works to Essex County Council Highways, these include:
- Damaged or not working street lamps
- Potholes in the road or pavement damage eg. broken tarmac or asphalt that requires resurfacing
- Blocked highway drains
- Cutting back private hedges feg. a hedge growing out of a private garden
- Repair to electrical street signs
- Works on fast roads above 30 mph
- Highway lines re-painting
