Local air quality management

Local Air Quality Management (LAQM) was introduced by Part IV of the Environment Act 1995.

Under LAQM we are required to regularly review and assess air quality within the district, and determine whether or not the air quality objectives are likely to be achieved.

Where an excedance is considered likely the council must declare an air quality management area (AQMA) and prepare an air quality action plan (AQAP) setting out measures it intends to put in place in pursuit of the objectives.

A source apportionment assessment is undertaken in order to understand the sources of pollution and therefore decide the appropriate actions to best improve air quality. This assessment was undertaken in 2021 as part of the upcoming revision of the council’s air quality action plan.
