Holocaust Memorial Day

Community news, News

Holocaust Memorial Day on 27 January encourages remembrance of genocide across the world.

In common with other public buildings across the UK, the offices of Epping Forest District Council will be lit in purple for Holocaust Memorial Day on Monday.

For a better future

This Holocaust Memorial Day marks the 80th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau, the largest Nazi concentration camp complex.

To mark the anniversary this year’s theme is ‘for a better future’. This theme encourages people to learn both from and about the Holocaust and more recent genocides, for a better future.

Hatred must be challenged

Councillor Les Burrows, Chairman of Epping Forest District Council said:

The Holocaust Memorial Day Trust is a charity funded by the UK Government. The trust promotes and supports Holocaust Memorial Day which serves as a reminder of the 6 million Jews who lost their lives during the Holocaust, alongside the millions of other people killed under Nazi persecution. It also reminds us of those lost during the more recent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Srebrenica and Darfur.

We face a challenging reality as genocide and injustice persist around the world and the language of hatred must be confronted by us all daily. Here in the UK, particularly in the Epping Forest district I am proud of the united community we have, committed to supporting each other regardless of race or religion.

Holocaust Memorial Day reminds us how fragile the peace we take for granted can be, and the importance of always protecting the shared values of tolerance and freedom we enjoy.
