North Weald Airfield
Essential information for pilots
North Weald Airfield is a very busy unlicensed general aviation aerodrome with a variety of users, including emergency service helicopters, flight training schools and jet & warbird experience flights.
We are also positioned within the Stansted Transponder Mandatory Zone (TMZ) and therefore infringements of controlled airspace can easily occur if pilots are not aware or do not adhere to the published procedure.

- Winter – 08:30 to sunset + 30 mins
- Summer – 08:30 to 19:00
General information
- All movements will be under visual flight rules:
- Visibility – At least 1,500m (estimated)
- Cloud base – At least 500ft AGL (estimated)
- Snow or ice – Visible runway surface conditions will be assessed by the airfield operations team and unofficial observations passed to pilots. The decision on whether the runway is suitable for use when contaminated by snow or ice is at the discretion of the operations team
- Circuit altitude 1,200ft (QNH), circuit height 900ft (QFE, available on request)
- No visiting aircraft circuits are permitted
- Pilots departing or arriving should avoid flying over Epping and any villages in the vicinity of the airfield where possible
- The Essex & Herts Air Ambulance operates from North Weald. When using the callsign Helimed 55 Alpha it has priority over all other traffic in the circuit, which must give way or go around as it departs on task
- All visiting aircraft are charged landing fees. All landing fees must be paid via the online payment portal before arrival. The only exceptions are current military, police or air ambulance aircraft or aircraft arriving for maintenance at one of our licensed engineering tenants, Vintage Aero and Weald Aviation.
- PPR is required in advance via telephone. We no longer accept airborne PPR
- Helicopters and other rotary-wing aircraft should adopt conventional fixed-wing joining procedures unless otherwise agreed with the control tower
- When jet aircraft are operating, pilots may be required to maintain circuit altitude in the case of a jet departure or remain clear of the circuit in the case of a jet arrival. The control tower will advise
Arrivals
- Crosswind join when arriving from the east:
- When joining crosswind for runway 20, please join over the 02 numbers heading towards Thornwood. Ensure you keep Woodside Industrial Estate to your left-hand side
- Downwind join when arriving from the west
Departures
- When departing to the east, avoid North Weald Village for noise abatement
- When runway 02 is in use, exercise caution not to infringe Stansted CTR, 2 nautical miles north of North Weald
- When runway 20 is in use, exercise caution not to infringe Stapleford ATZ, 2 nautical miles south of North Weald:
- For departures from runway 20, no turns are to be made before reaching the forest towards the end of the runway
