Make way for Epping’s new leisure centre and swimming pool.
Bakers Lane car park, in Epping, will soon be closing to make way for the exciting development of the new Epping Leisure Centre. The centre will replace the existing Epping Sports Centre in Hemnall Street, and forms one part of a wider development project for the town.
Energy efficient
Epping Leisure Centre will become the newest and most energy efficient in the district, supporting the council’s aim to become carbon neutral by 2030. As well as air-sourced heat pumps and digital technology, the centre will incorporate the highest levels of insulation into construction, keeping future energy bills and carbon emissions as low as possible.
Epping Leisure Centre facilities will include:
- A main swimming pool
- A learner pool
- Sports hall
- Health and fitness gym
- Studios
Partnerships and opportunities
Epping Leisure Centre will be delivered by Epping Forest District Council in partnership with Places Leisure. Pellikaan Construction Ltd is carrying out the construction work.
Places Leisure manages all the district’s leisure centres on behalf of the council. Residents may be familiar with Pellikaan Construction Ltd, as it is the same company that successfully built the Waltham Abbey Leisure Centre in 2017.
On site
Contractors are expected to be on site shortly after the Bakers Lane car park closes to start site preparation and survey works.
Bakers Lane car park closes from midnight on Tuesday 14 November 2023. The new Epping Leisure Centre is estimated to open in 2025.
330 space car park opens
Development of the leisure centre in Bakers Lane has been made possible by the opening of the new multi-storey car park in Cottis Lane. The 330 new parking spaces will also allow the temporary car park in St Johns Road to close in preparation for residential development.
St John’s temporarily provided additional parking while Cottis Yard car park was being built.
Cottis Yard opens from Thursday 2 November 2023.
Important milestone
Councillor Ray Balcombe, Cabinet Member for Contracts, Service Delivery and Improvements said:
I am thrilled that work will soon begin on the new leisure centre. As well as delivering on our promise to provide a new centre before Hemnall Street closes, residents can look forward to wonderful new facilities including Epping’s first municipal swimming pools. I’m eager to see it grow and develop into a fantastic resource.
The new Epping Leisure Centre is an important milestone in the development of the town, bringing many benefits to the whole district. It will help boost the local economy, provide additional employment opportunities, in the construction phase and once it is open. It will also promote and support a healthier lifestyle and bring more visitors to Epping High Street.
Great mix of leisure opportunities
Gert-Jan Peeters, Managing Director of Pellikaan Construction Ltd said:
We are pleased to be part of this project, delivering new leisure facilities for the people in Epping. We look forward to working on the new centre, incorporating sustainable construction solutions as well as providing a great mix of leisure opportunities to the community.
