Statement from leader regarding the demonstration in Epping

Community news, News

In response to the disruptive incidents that unfolded at the demonstration in Epping at the Bell Hotel on Thursday evening 17 July.

The Leader of Council, Councillor Chris Whitbread praised Essex Police for their support and response in the face of hostility and thanked those who attended to protest peacefully.

Statement by Councillor Chris Whitbread

I am deeply disappointed that during the demonstration outside the Bell Hotel in Epping on Thursday night, some individuals chose to engage in violent and disruptive behaviour. I condemn their actions. They not only undermined their message but also put fellow protesters, police officers and residents at risk.

I acknowledge the right of individuals to gather and express their views, and I’d like to thank those that attended peacefully, but violence and aggression have no place on the streets of Epping.

I would like to extend our sincere thanks to Essex Police, officers from the Metropolitan Police and British Transport Police, and the emergency services for their professionalism and dedication to keeping the residents of Epping safe in challenging circumstances. Their presence helped prevent further escalation and ensured that attendees could safely disperse.

We have consistently shared concerns with the Home Office that the Bell Hotel is an entirely unsuitable location for this facility and should close. We continue to press Home Office officials for the immediate closure of the site and are encouraged that our local MPs are now actively supporting our call.
