Summer memory train 2025

Community news, News

78 passengers had a memorable journey aboard the Summer Memory Train on Wednesday 16 July 2025.

Residents in the district living with dementia

The special day trip is designed specifically for residents in the district living with dementia or mild cognitive impairment, along with their family members, friends, or carers.

The event, now in its fourth year, welcomed participants at North Weald station, where they were greeted by friendly volunteers who provided goody bags filled with engaging activities, helpful information, and sweets generously donated by Epping Tesco in collaboration with Kinder Essex.

Free event

As the train travelled toward Ongar, attendees were joined by the Chairman of the Council Louise Mead and Vice Chairman Councillor Allan Lion. They spent time talking with the passengers before passengers enjoyed lunch and a lively sing-along, creating an atmosphere of joy and reminiscence among the participants.

The free event, organised by Epping Forest District Council’s (EFDC) Community Development and Wellbeing team, was made possible by donations from Hammond and Smith Estate Agents, Sun Vit-D3 and other private individuals, with the support of Epping Ongar Railway and the many volunteers from various organisations and groups.

Bringing happy memories back

One passenger said:

We both had a lovely day, the volunteer staff are so kind and welcoming, and it means an awful lot to both of us to have the opportunity to attend this event. Not only did my husband enjoy the train, but also the old bus which I he didn’t want to get off of. It brought happy memories back to my husband, so thank you.

Another added:

First of all I would like to thank all the organisers and staff who made it a very successful day. My wife who has dementia thoroughly enjoyed herself as did I. Everybody was very friendly and the whole outing to me could not be bettered.

Community-driven experiences

The Memory Train is a truly inspiring initiative, offering a special space for people living with dementia to connect with their loved ones. It’s a shining example of how local organisations can come together to create meaningful, community-driven experiences

It was a joy to explore the train and engage in conversations with both caregivers and individuals living with dementia.

Chairman of Epping Forest District Council, Cllr Louise Mead
