Elections and voting
Special election year
2024 is a special election year.
New electoral ward boundaries result in all-out district council elections on 2 May 2024. From the 2024 election onwards there will be fewer, larger wards, each served by 3 councillors.
- Before 2 May 2024 there were 32 wards and 58 district councillors
- From 2 May 2024 there will be 18 wards and 54 district councillors
The changes follow a review of the number of councillors, wards and ward names by the Local Government Boundary Commission.
You can find details of the changes on:
From 2025, voting in local elections for district councillors will go back to voting by thirds. This means a third of councillors are elected every year over a 4 year period. In the fourth year voting is for county councillors at Essex County Council.
Voting terms
Voters can vote for up to 3 candidates in the 2024 district council election.
The district councillor receiving the most votes in each ward will serve a full 4-year term. Councillors who come second and third will be back up for election in years 2 and 3.
