Buckhurst Hill welcomes new conservation area

Buckhurst Hill welcomes new conservation area

Housing, planning and environment news, News

The St Johns area of Buckhurst Hill was designated a conservation area at Cabinet on 27 May 2025.

Unique and distinctive

A Victorian church and school, a historic public house, Victorian terraces and villas, countless veteran trees and surviving pockets of Epping Forest are all part of the new conservation area.

A conservation area is defined as an area of special architectural or historic interest, the character or appearance of which it is desirable to preserve or enhance. It will ensure any new developments harmonize with the existing special character that make the St Johns area of Buckhurst Hill unique and distinctive.

Local residents are encouraged to help to preserve the character and appearance of the area by:

  • Keeping properties in good condition
  • Retaining original features on historic buildings and, if replacements are needed, replacing them on a like-for-like basis
  • Accurately reinstating lost architectural features
  • Making sure that any additions to properties in the conservation area are in keeping with the building and the area as a whole

Protected for generations to come

I’m immensely proud that the St Johns area of Buckhurst Hill has been designated a conservation area. The last conservation area designated in the Epping Forest district was the fabulous Hill Hall in Theydon Mount, back in December 1996.

As both a resident and a councillor representing the Buckhurst Hill West ward I want to thank everyone that took part in the consultation. Your feedback has been instrumental in the creation of the St John’s conservation area and I hope this will help ensure the unique character of this part of Buckhurst Hill continues to be protected for many generations to come.

Councillor Ken Williamson, Shaping our district portfolio holder
