You can apply for an exemption if the property you live in is occupied only by students, school or college leavers.
You must attach a valid student certificate for each individual occupier. Without the full information and all supporting documents, we will not be able to award the exemption. (more…)

Properties occupied by visiting forces are exempt for Council Tax.
You must provide your forces ID and proof of your income for example wage slips or a letter from your employer. Without the full information and all supporting documents we will not be able to award the exemption. (more…)

You can apply for a 50% Council Tax discount for up to 1 year.
Eligibility criteria
You can apply if your property is vacant and unfurnished and requires or is undergoing major repair works or structural alteration (this doesn’t include refurbishment) to render it habitable.
You must continue to pay Council Tax in accordance with your bill until your discount has been granted. (more…)

You can qualify for a discount if you are employed to learn a trade or a profession.
Eligibility criteria
You must meet all the following conditions:
- You aren’t paid more than £195 a week
- Your salary is substantially less than you’d get once you’re qualified
- Your training programme leads to a qualification accredited by the National Council for Vocational Qualifications or the Scottish Vocational Education Council
You must continue to pay Council Tax in accordance with your bill until your discount has been granted. (more…)

Occupied exemption class U
Properties occupied only by those who are severely mentally impaired can be made exempt for Council Tax.
You must attach your proof of benefits award letters. On the last page for additional information, you must provide the names of any other occupants in the property.

Second home discount

A second home is defined as not a main home, but is furnished.
Eligibility criteria
The discount for a second home is 5%, meaning that those liable for paying the Council Tax must pay 95% of the full charge. Where second homes are related to a person’s job a 50% discount may apply.

Occupied exemption class W
A property which is part of another property (such as an annexe) that is occupied by a relative of the homeowner, and is over the age of 65, severely mentally impaired or disabled to be exempt for Council Tax.
You must provide proof of how the occupier in the annexe is related to you and why they are dependent on you. (more…)

You can get a 50% Council Tax discount on an annexe which is lived in by a family member.
Eligibility criteria
The discount is not based on occupation or furniture but on use of the annexe by the resident of the main building or occupation by a family member.
