    Occupied solely by members of visiting forces

    Occupied exemption class P

    Properties occupied by visiting forces are exempt for Council Tax.

    You must provide your forces ID and proof of your income for example wage slips or a letter from your employer. Without the full information and all supporting documents we will not be able to award the exemption. (more…)

    Uninhabitable property

    You can apply for a 50% Council Tax discount for up to 1 year if your property is vacant and unfurnished and requires or is undergoing major repair works or structural alteration (this doesn’t include refurbishment) to render it habitable.

    Apprentice disregard

    You can qualify for a discount if you are employed to learn a trade or a profession and you meet all the following conditions:

    • You aren’t paid more than £195 a week
    • Your salary is substantially less than you’d get once you’re qualified
    • Your training programme leads to a qualification accredited by the National Council for Vocational Qualifications or the Scottish Vocational Education Council

    Occupied only by severely mentally impaired persons

    Occupied exemption class U

    Properties occupied only by those who are severely mentally impaired can be made exempt for Council Tax.

    Part of this form you must give to your GP to complete. You must attach proof of the benefits paid to the mentally impaired person and give the names of any other occupants in the property and their relationship to the mentally impaired person. (more…)

    Second home discount

    A second home is defined as not a main home, but is furnished.

    The discount for a second home is 5%, meaning that those liable for paying the Council Tax must pay 95% of the full charge. Where second homes are related to a person’s job a 50% discount may apply.

    Annexes occupied by a dependent relative

    Occupied exemption class W

    A property which is part of another property (such as an annexe) that is occupied by a relative of the home owner. They must be over 65, severely mentally impaired or disabled to be exempt for Council Tax.

  • Discount for occupied annexe

    Discount for occupied annexe

    You can get a 50% Council Tax discount on an annexe which is lived in by a family member. The discount is not based on occupation or furniture but on use of the annexe by the resident of the main building or occupation by a family member.

    The discount doesn’t apply if a non-family member occupies an annexe. (more…)

    You may be entitled to a disabled relief discount if you are disabled or you have a disabled person living with you who needs:

    • An extra room
    • An extra bathroom or kitchen
    • Extra space to use a wheelchair
