Report a stray dog
If you find a stray dog and can’t contact the owner, you must report it.
You must return a stray dog to its owner if you know who the owner is. If you want to keep the dog and can’t find the owner, you may be allowed to keep it.
Telephone 07815 512833 to report a stray dog:
- 7am to 9pm on weekdays
- 10am to 7pm on weekends and Bank Holidays

If you have lost your dog, telephone us on 07815 512833.
We keep a register of all stray dogs we pick up and all lost dogs reported to us. To reclaim a lost dog, owners must pay a fee and any kennel charges before the dog is collected.

We will keep a dog for 7 days. It then becomes our property and will be destroyed or rehomed if not been claimed.

Essex Police deal with dangerous dogs. If a dog has attacked someone or is one of the legally prohibited breeds they should:
Only call 999 if an attack is in progress. Essex Police are responsible for traffic safety and will attend if a stray dog is a danger to traffic.

Get your dog microchipped
You must make sure your dog is fitted with a microchip by the time it’s 8 weeks old. You can be fined up to £500 if your dog is not microchipped. Find out more at:
